It’s Thunder, and I’m back to file another interesting report on a job in our community.
Today I got to visit the dental office of Dr. Colvin and Tao. I interned with Grant’s mom, Dawn. She is a dental hygienist. Her job is to provide dental services to patients. She cleans and polishes their teeth, takes x-rays and gives fluoride treatments. She also teaches her patients how to properly brush, floss and care for their teeth.
The office she works at is in the suburbs near the Shops at Briargate. She interacts with many members of the community. She sees all types of patients: students, teachers, doctors, salesmen, as well as many others. Her job supports the community because she provides preventative dental care and maintains the health of her patient’s teeth and gums. Many times the dental hygienist or dentist will find cavities, broken teeth, gum disease or other problems at a patient’s dental cleaning.
If her job did not exist, people would not know they needed to have dental treatment (such as a filling or orthodontics) and they may develop into bigger issues such as a toothache. They would also not know how to keep their teeth clean and cavity-free. I learned that is important to see your dental hygienist every 6 months for a cleaning and check-up. They will keep your smile healthy!
I hope my report helped you learn a little more about a dental hygienist and how they support our community. I can’t wait for my next assignment. I’m sure it will be just as great as today was.
